Common Name:
Japanese Snowball
Description:
Viburnum plicatum, commonly known as Japanese Snowball, is a deciduous shrub celebrated for its tiered, horizontal branching and dramatic spring floral display. This striking ornamental features dark green, heavily textured leaves that resemble pleated fabric—hence the species name plicatum. In late spring, it produces an abundance of large, spherical clusters of pure white flowers that resemble snowballs, standing out boldly against the foliage. These are sometimes followed by red berries that mature to black, attracting birds. As the seasons change, the foliage turns a rich burgundy-purple in autumn, offering year-round interest. Viburnum plicatum thrives in Melbourne gardens in a sunny to partly shaded position with well-drained, fertile soil. It is ideal for use as a feature shrub, informal hedge, or part of a mixed border. While it can tolerate some dryness once established, it benefits from regular watering during extended dry periods.
