Common Name:
Chinese Tallow Tree
Description:
Triadica sebifera, commonly known as the Chinese Tallow Tree, is a fast-growing deciduous tree admired for its spectacular autumn foliage and ornamental seed capsules. In spring and summer, it produces bright green, heart-shaped leaves that provide dense shade. As autumn approaches, the foliage transforms into a stunning display of red, orange, yellow, and purple hues, making it one of the most colourful trees of the season. In late summer to early autumn, the tree produces small, yellow-green flowers that attract bees, followed by clusters of waxy, white seeds, which resemble popcorn and persist into winter.
This adaptable tree thrives in a wide range of conditions, tolerating drought, poor soils, and coastal environments. It prefers full sun and well-drained soils, making it a great choice for feature planting, shade, or street trees. However, it has invasive tendencies in some regions and should be planted with caution.
