Common Name:
Common Thyme
Description:
Thymus vulgaris, commonly known as Common Thyme, is a hardy, evergreen herb valued for its aromatic foliage and versatility in both the kitchen and garden. This compact, woody perennial produces small, grey-green leaves packed with a strong, earthy fragrance and flavour, making it a staple in a wide range of culinary dishes. In late spring to early summer, it bears clusters of tiny pale pink to lilac flowers that are highly attractive to bees and other pollinators. Well-suited to Melbourne’s climate, Common Thyme thrives in full sun and well-drained soil, performing particularly well in dry, exposed positions and coastal gardens. Once established, it is highly drought tolerant and requires minimal maintenance. Its neat, low-growing habit makes it ideal for herb gardens, borders, rockeries, and pots, as well as for use as a low edging plant.
