Common Name: Western Red Cedar
Description: The Western Red Cedar (Thuja plicata) is a majestic evergreen conifer native to the Pacific Northwest of North America. Renowned for its impressive size, it can reach heights of 50 to 70 meters in its natural habitat, with a narrow, pyramidal form and a buttressed base. The tree's foliage consists of scale-like, shiny dark green leaves arranged in flat sprays, often displaying white markings on the underside. Small, elliptical cones, approximately 12 mm long, appear in clusters and stand upright. Western Red Cedar thrives in sun to partial shade and prefers moist, well-drained soils. In Melbourne's climate, it can be cultivated successfully, particularly in areas that can replicate its native cool, moist conditions. This species is valued for its aromatic, decay-resistant timber, commonly used in outdoor construction and for crafting musical instruments.
