Description: The Swamp Cypress (Taxodium distichum), also known as Bald Cypress, is a deciduous conifer native to the southeastern United States. Renowned for its adaptability, this tree thrives in both waterlogged and well-drained soils, making it an excellent choice for areas prone to flooding or with high water tables. In cultivation, it typically reaches heights of 15 to 21 meters, forming a narrow, pyramidal shape when young and developing a more rounded crown with age. The light green, fern-like foliage turns a spectacular russet colour in autumn before shedding, providing seasonal interest. Its bark is deeply fissured and red-brown, adding to its visual appeal. Mature specimens may develop unique root protrusions known as "knees," especially when grown in or near water. In Melbourne's climate, Swamp Cypress performs well, particularly in moist areas such as around ponds or along stream edges. It is also valued by bonsai enthusiasts for its distinctive characteristics.
