Common Name: Giant Sequoia
Description: The Giant Sequoia (Sequoiadendron giganteum) is an awe-inspiring evergreen conifer, renowned as the most massive tree species on Earth. Native to California's Sierra Nevada mountains, these trees are celebrated for their immense size and longevity, with some specimens living for over 3,000 years. In their natural habitat, they can soar to heights exceeding 90 meters; however, when cultivated in Australia, they typically reach between 30 to 40 meters. The Giant Sequoia features a dense, pyramidal-oval crown in its youth, with reddish-brown, deeply furrowed, and spongy bark that offers remarkable fire resistance. Its blue-green, scale-like leaves are arranged spirally along the branches. This species thrives in full sun and prefers deep, well-drained sandy loams with a pH ranging from 5.5 to 7.5. While it can withstand temperatures as low as -31°C, it flourishes in mesic sites such as drainage bottoms and meadow edges. In Melbourne's climate, the Giant Sequoia can be successfully cultivated, making a majestic addition to large landscapes and parks.
