Common Name:
Mexican Blue Salvia
Description:
Salvia ‘Mexican Blue’ is a striking, upright perennial salvia known for its vivid cobalt to deep violet-blue flowers that bloom over an extended season. Believed to be a form or hybrid of Salvia chamaedryoides, this variety brings rich colour and soft texture to garden beds, borders, and containers. Its small, silvery-grey foliage forms a neat, bushy mound, contrasting beautifully with the intense blue flower spikes that appear from late spring through to autumn in Melbourne gardens. Highly attractive to bees and other pollinators, ‘Mexican Blue’ is also heat and drought tolerant once established, making it a great performer in full sun and free-draining soils. With minimal maintenance, it will reward you with months of colour and motion. Light pruning after each flowering flush helps maintain a compact shape and encourages further blooming. It’s especially effective when mass-planted or paired with silver, yellow, or white-toned companions.
