Description: Rose 'Hansa' is a hardy hybrid rugosa rose introduced in 1905 by breeders Schaum & Van Tol. It forms a vigorous, suckering shrub with thorny stems and leathery, dark green foliage. The plant produces abundant, highly fragrant double blooms in a deep magenta to crimson-purple tone, with a distinctive spicy clove-like scent. Flowering begins in late spring or early summer and continues in repeat flushes through to autumn. As the blooms fade, they are followed by large, showy red to orange-red hips that add ornamental value and attract birds. These hips are also edible and sometimes used to make teas or preserves. 'Hansa' is well regarded for its toughness, thriving in poor soils and exposed or coastal positions, including salt-laden and windy environments. It is particularly valued in Melbourne gardens for its resilience, low maintenance needs, and reliable disease resistance.
