Common Name:
Swamp White Oak
Description:
Quercus bicolor, commonly known as the Swamp White Oak, is a beautiful and resilient large deciduous tree native to North America. It is well-regarded for its striking two-toned foliage, with glossy dark green leaves on top and silvery-white undersides, creating a shimmering effect when caught in the wind. In autumn, the foliage turns brilliant shades of yellow, bronze, and red before shedding for winter. The tree produces acorns that serve as a valuable food source for wildlife, including birds and mammals.
Despite its common name, the Swamp White Oak is highly adaptable and grows well in both wet and dry conditions, making it an excellent choice for a wide range of landscapes. It thrives in full sun and well-drained soils but can tolerate heavy clay and periodic flooding. This slow-to-moderate growing tree develops a broad, rounded canopy, making it a fantastic shade provider for parks, large gardens, and street plantings.
