Common Name:
Sawtooth Oak
Description:
Quercus acutissima, commonly known as the Sawtooth Oak, is a fast-growing deciduous tree prized for its distinctive serrated leaves, which resemble those of a chestnut tree. In spring and summer, its lush green foliage creates a dense canopy, providing excellent shade. During autumn, the leaves turn rich golden-yellow to russet brown, adding seasonal interest before they drop. The tree produces small, elongated acorns with a spiky, fringed cup, which are highly attractive to wildlife, especially birds and squirrels.
Native to East Asia, the Sawtooth Oak is highly adaptable and thrives in a wide range of soil conditions, including clay and sandy soils. It prefers full sun and is highly drought-tolerant once established, making it a great choice for urban plantings, large gardens, and parklands. Its rapid growth rate and strong branching structure make it an excellent option for shade, windbreaks, and reforestation projects.
