Common Name:
J.H. Veitch Sour Cherry
Description:
Prunus cerasus 'J.H. Veitch' is a highly ornamental and productive variety of sour cherry, prized for both its stunning spring blossoms and tart, flavourful fruit. In early spring, it bursts into bloom with an abundance of delicate white flowers, attracting pollinators and creating a breathtaking display. As the season progresses, bright green foliage emerges, turning warm golden shades in autumn before shedding. By summer, the tree produces small, deep red cherries that are excellent for jams, preserves, baking, and culinary use. Unlike sweet cherries, the fruit of 'J.H. Veitch' has a tangy, tart flavour, making it a favourite for traditional cherry-based desserts and liqueurs.
This deciduous tree prefers full sun and well-drained soils, thriving in cooler climates. It is relatively low-maintenance and can be grown as a feature tree, in an orchard setting, or even in large pots. While self-fertile, it benefits from cross-pollination with other sour cherry varieties for improved yields.
