Description: The Japanese Black Pine (Pinus thunbergii) is an evergreen conifer native to the coastal regions of Japan and South Korea. Renowned for its striking, irregular form and dark green needles, this tree adds a distinctive aesthetic to various landscapes. In its natural habitat, it can reach heights up to 40 metres; however, in cultivation, it typically grows between 6 to 18 metres tall, with a spread of 3.5 to 6 metres. The bark transitions from grey on young trees to a mature black, deeply furrowed texture. Notably, the tree features whitish, candle-like terminal buds that contrast elegantly with its dark foliage. Adaptable to Melbourne's climate, the Japanese Black Pine thrives in full sun and well-drained soils, demonstrating excellent tolerance to coastal conditions, including salt spray and sandy soils. Its resilience and unique appearance make it a popular choice for coastal plantings, bonsai cultivation, and as a specimen tree in gardens.
