Common Name:
Fuyu Persimmon
Description:
Diospyros kaki ‘Fuyu’ is a highly popular deciduous fruit tree prized for its sweet non-astringent fruit, attractive growth habit, and excellent autumn colour. This productive variety produces medium to large bright orange fruit with crisp, sweet flesh that can be eaten while still firm, unlike many traditional persimmons that require softening before consumption. The fruit matures through autumn and hangs attractively on the bare branches after leaf fall, adding ornamental value to the garden. During the growing season, the tree develops lush green foliage that transforms into brilliant shades of yellow, orange, and red in autumn. ‘Fuyu’ performs exceptionally well in Melbourne’s temperate climate, thriving in full sun with fertile, well-drained soil and regular watering during establishment and fruit development. It benefits from a warm, sunny position to encourage reliable fruit ripening. With its manageable size, productive harvests, and striking seasonal display, this variety is an excellent choice for home orchards, edible gardens, and feature planting.
