Common Name:
Ornamental Oregano 'Dingle Fairy'
Description:
Origanum 'Dingle Fairy' is a delightful, compact ornamental oregano prized for its delicate pinkish-purple flowers, attractive green foliage and naturally dense, mounding growth habit. This charming perennial produces masses of small, papery, hop-like floral bracts that gradually develop soft pink and mauve tones, creating a beautiful display of subtle colour and texture throughout the warmer months. Its small, aromatic leaves form a neat, spreading mound, making it an excellent choice for rockeries, garden borders, cottage gardens, decorative pots and hanging baskets. Growing approximately 15 cm tall and 30 cm wide, 'Dingle Fairy' is particularly well suited to smaller spaces and container planting. This water-wise variety thrives in full sun and prefers well-drained soil, tolerating dry conditions once established. Flowering predominantly from late spring through summer and into early autumn, it attracts beneficial pollinators, including bees, while requiring minimal maintenance. In Melbourne's climate, it performs particularly well in sunny, sheltered positions with excellent drainage, especially during the wetter winter months. A light trim after flowering helps maintain its compact shape and encourages fresh growth. With its delicate ornamental flowers, aromatic foliage and excellent drought tolerance, Origanum 'Dingle Fairy' is a wonderful addition to Mediterranean-style gardens, cottage landscapes and water-wise planting schemes.
