Common Name:
Ophiopogon ‘Black Dragon’
Description:
Ophiopogon ‘Black Dragon’ is a striking ornamental grass-like plant grown for its dramatic, near-black foliage that adds bold contrast and texture to any garden setting. Despite often being called “black mondo grass,” it is not a true grass, but rather a hardy, clumping perennial from the lily family. Its narrow, strap-like leaves are a deep purple-black colour, forming dense, low-growing tufts that spread slowly via underground rhizomes. In summer, it produces small, bell-shaped pale lilac to white flowers tucked among the foliage, followed by glossy black berries. ‘Black Dragon’ thrives in Melbourne gardens, tolerating full sun to full shade, though it shows its richest colour in part shade. It’s an ideal ground cover or edging plant and works beautifully when planted en masse, between pavers, or in contrast combinations with silver, green, or chartreuse-leafed plants. Drought-tolerant once established and low maintenance, it’s a reliable choice for modern, formal, or Japanese-style gardens.
