Common Name:
Evergreen Chinese Silver Grass
Description:
Miscanthus transmorrisonensis is an elegant, fountain-forming ornamental grass known for its fine texture, graceful arching leaves, and long-lasting flower plumes. Native to Taiwan’s mountainous regions, this variety is distinctive for being evergreen or semi-evergreen in milder climates like Melbourne, making it an excellent structural element in year-round planting schemes. In late summer through autumn, soft silvery-pink to creamy white flower heads emerge above the foliage, eventually maturing to a golden hue as they age, adding movement and lightness to garden beds. This grass thrives in full sun to part shade and prefers well-drained soil, tolerating both clay and sandy loam once established. It is drought-tolerant, low-maintenance, and wind-resistant, making it ideal for borders, mass planting, or as a feature in gravel or modern-style gardens. It does not self-seed aggressively and generally holds its form without becoming invasive in Melbourne conditions.
