Common Name: Free Spirit Michelia
Description: 'Free Spirit' is a unique, prostrate form of Michelia yunnanensis, now classified as Magnolia laevifolia. This evergreen shrub is notable for its spreading habit, reaching a height of approximately 45–60 cm and extending up to 1.8–2.4 meters in width. From late winter to early summer, it produces an abundance of fragrant, creamy-white, upward-facing flowers that emerge from fuzzy, brown buds. The foliage consists of dark green, glossy leaves with velvety brown undersides, adding year-round interest. 'Free Spirit' thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers moist, well-drained soils with a slightly acidic to neutral pH. Its low-growing, spreading nature makes it ideal for ground cover, cascading over walls, or as a specimen in containers. In Melbourne's climate, it performs well, provided it is protected from harsh winds and extreme cold. Regular mulching helps retain soil moisture and maintain root health.
