Common Name:
Melaleuca 'Ulladulla Beacon'
Description:
Melaleuca hypericifolia 'Ulladulla Beacon' is a dense, low-growing Australian native ground cover selected for its outstanding spreading habit and prolific flowering. This hardy cultivar produces masses of vibrant red brush-like flowers from late spring into summer, which contrast beautifully with its small, rich green foliage. The flowers are rich in nectar and highly attractive to birds, bees, and beneficial insects, making it a superb choice for wildlife-friendly gardens. Bred from the larger Melaleuca hypericifolia species, 'Ulladulla Beacon' was developed specifically for ground cover use and is excellent for suppressing weeds, controlling erosion, and stabilising banks or embankments. Thriving in full sun and a wide range of soil types, including clay and sandy soils, it is well suited to Melbourne’s conditions, being tolerant of drought, light frost, and coastal exposure. This variety also requires minimal maintenance, with an occasional trim to keep its form neat and dense.
