Description: The Susan Magnolia (Magnolia 'Susan') is a compact, deciduous shrub or small tree, ideal for smaller gardens. It is part of the "Little Girl" series of hybrid magnolias developed in the 1950s by the U.S. National Arboretum. This cultivar is renowned for its striking, fragrant, goblet-shaped flowers that bloom in mid to late spring. The blossoms, measuring up to 12 cm across, display deep reddish-purple hues on the outside and lighter tones within. The foliage consists of oval, mid-green leaves that turn golden-yellow in autumn, adding seasonal interest. 'Susan' thrives in full sun to part shade and prefers moist but well-drained, slightly acidic, organically rich soils. Its later blooming period helps it avoid damage from late spring frosts, making it well-suited to Melbourne's climate.
