Common Name: Suishoren Magnolia
Description: The Suishoren Magnolia (Magnolia 'Suishoren') is a deciduous small tree or large shrub, resulting from a Japanese hybridization of Magnolia stellata and Magnolia denudata. It showcases lightly fragrant, white, star-shaped flowers that bloom in early spring, often before the foliage emerges. The blossoms are intermediate in size between those of its parent species and are held more upright than those of M. stellata. The plant has a compact, bushy form with a more upright growth habit compared to M. stellata. It thrives in well-drained, slightly acidic soils with a pH between 5.5 and 6.5, and requires full sun to part shade. In Melbourne's climate, the Suishoren Magnolia typically flowers in early spring, adding a delightful fragrance and visual appeal to gardens.
