Common Name:
Royal Purple Magnolia
Description:
The Royal Purple Magnolia (Magnolia 'Royal Purple') is a deciduous tree renowned for its slender, columnar form and vibrant, cup-shaped blooms. In early to mid-spring, it showcases deep rose-purple flowers that stand out against the bare branches, creating a striking visual display. The foliage emerges post-flowering, presenting large, glossy green leaves that provide a lush backdrop throughout the growing season. This cultivar was developed by New Zealand breeder Peter Cave, likely as a seedling of Magnolia sprengeri var. diva. In Melbourne's climate, the Royal Purple Magnolia thrives in well-drained, slightly acidic soils and prefers full sun to part shade. Its narrow growth habit makes it an excellent choice for confined spaces or as a feature plant in gardens and landscapes.
