Common Name:
Burgundy Tea Tree
Description:
Leptospermum morrisonii ‘Burgundy’ is a striking cultivar of the Australian native tea tree, admired for its deep burgundy-tinged foliage and contrasting flushes of white flowers. This compact to medium-sized shrub brings colour and texture to the garden year-round, with new growth emerging in vivid burgundy-red tones before maturing to dark green with a purple hue. In spring, it produces a profusion of small, white, five-petalled flowers that attract bees and beneficial insects. ‘Burgundy’ thrives in full sun to part shade and is tolerant of a variety of soil types, including clay and sandy soils, as long as drainage is good. It is well suited to Melbourne’s climate, showing excellent drought tolerance once established and coping with light frost. This versatile shrub is perfect for informal hedging, screening, or as a colourful feature in native and mixed planting schemes. Light pruning after flowering will help maintain a dense, tidy shape.
