Common Name:
Coast Tea Tree
Description:
Leptospermum laevigatum, commonly known as Coast Tea Tree, is a hardy and fast-growing Australian native shrub or small tree, particularly well suited to coastal and exposed conditions. Native to the eastern and southern coastlines of Australia, this species is prized for its dense, twisted growth habit, silver-grey foliage, and mass of small, white, five-petalled flowers that appear in late winter through spring. Its spreading form and wind resistance make it a favourite for coastal revegetation, windbreaks, and erosion control, while its sculptural branching and soft foliage provide strong ornamental appeal in both naturalistic and modern gardens. It thrives in full sun and well-drained soils, tolerates drought, salt-laden winds, and poor sandy soils, and once established, requires minimal maintenance. In Melbourne gardens, it is frequently used for screening, informal hedging, and as a fast filler plant in exposed or difficult sites.
