Common Name:
Grosso Lavender
Description:
Lavandula × intermedia, commonly known as Lavandin, is a hybrid lavender resulting from a cross between English lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) and Portuguese lavender (Lavandula latifolia). This evergreen shrub is celebrated for its robust growth, aromatic foliage, and abundant, fragrant flower spikes. The narrow, grey-green leaves form a dense, bushy mound, providing year-round interest. In summer, tall stems rise above the foliage, bearing long spikes of small, tubular flowers in shades of violet-blue to purple, depending on the cultivar. These blooms are highly attractive to bees and other pollinators, enhancing garden biodiversity. Lavandin thrives in full sun and well-drained soils, exhibiting excellent drought tolerance once established. Its resilience and low maintenance requirements make it an ideal choice for Melbourne gardens, particularly in coastal and low-water landscapes. Regular pruning after flowering helps maintain its shape and encourages prolific blooming in subsequent seasons.
