Description:
Lagerstroemia indica ‘New Orleans’ is a compact deciduous crepe myrtle admired for its prolific flowering, attractive smooth bark, and excellent heat tolerance. This ornamental small tree or large shrub produces masses of vivid pink, crinkled flowers through summer and into autumn, creating a long-lasting and colourful display during Melbourne’s warmer months. Its lush green foliage provides a fresh backdrop to the blooms before turning attractive shades of orange and red in autumn. As the tree matures, the bark peels to reveal decorative mottled tones beneath, adding winter interest to the garden. ‘New Orleans’ thrives in full sun and performs best in well-drained soil with regular watering during establishment. Once established, it is notably drought tolerant and highly suited to Melbourne’s dry summer conditions. Its manageable size and reliable flowering make it ideal for feature planting, avenue planting, courtyards, and larger pots.
