Common Name:
Hyssop
Description:
Hyssopus officinalis is a hardy, aromatic perennial herb valued for both its ornamental appeal and traditional herbal uses. It forms a neat, bushy clump of narrow, dark green leaves that release a strong, slightly minty fragrance when brushed or crushed. From late spring through summer, it produces upright spikes of small, tubular flowers in shades of deep blue to violet, occasionally pink or white, which are highly attractive to bees and other beneficial pollinators. Well suited to Melbourne’s climate, hyssop thrives in full sun and well-drained soil, tolerating dry conditions once established. It is ideal for herb gardens, cottage plantings, borders, and low hedging, and responds well to regular pruning to maintain a compact shape and encourage fresh growth.
