Common Name:
Munchkin Oakleaf Hydrangea

Description:
Hydrangea quercifolia ‘Munchkin’ is a compact deciduous oakleaf hydrangea valued for its dense growth habit, long-lasting flowers, and spectacular seasonal foliage colour. This dwarf variety produces large upright clusters of creamy white flowers from late spring into summer, gradually ageing to soft pink tones as the season progresses. Its deeply lobed oak-shaped leaves provide excellent texture throughout the growing season before transforming into rich shades of burgundy, red, and purple in autumn. ‘Munchkin’ is especially suited to smaller gardens, shaded borders, woodland-style plantings, and decorative pots due to its compact size and neat form. In Melbourne’s climate, it performs best in moist, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter and benefits from protection against harsh afternoon sun. Once established, it is relatively hardy and tolerant of short dry periods. With its attractive foliage, extended ornamental interest, and compact habit, this variety is an outstanding choice for adding year-round texture and colour to the garden.
