Common Name:
Fragrant Plantain Lily

Description:
Hosta plantaginea 'Grandiflora', commonly known as the Fragrant Plantain Lily, is a beautiful shade-loving perennial prized for both its lush foliage and its large, highly fragrant white flowers. Native to China and widely cultivated in temperate gardens, this variety of hosta stands out for its broad, glossy green leaves and elegant, trumpet-shaped blooms that appear in late summer. In Melbourne gardens, it performs best in sheltered, part-shade to full-shade positions with rich, well-drained soil and regular moisture. The foliage forms dense, low-growing clumps that are excellent for underplanting, edging shaded borders, or as a striking contrast to finer-textured plants. Unlike many other hostas, 'Grandiflora' is notable for its perfumed blooms, which open in the evening and attract pollinators such as moths. It is dormant in winter, with fresh foliage emerging each spring.
