Common Name:
Obsidian Coral Bells
Description:
Heuchera 'Obsidian' is a stunning evergreen perennial prized for its rich, near-black foliage that brings depth and drama to shaded garden spaces. The broad, glossy leaves are a deep, velvety maroon—almost black—reminiscent of the volcanic glass for which it is named. Forming a compact and tidy mound, this variety is ideal for borders, containers, and underplanting in part shade to full shade positions. In late spring to early summer, slender stems rise above the foliage bearing small, creamy-white flowers that attract bees and beneficial insects. 'Obsidian' prefers humus-rich, well-drained soil and regular moisture but is tolerant of short dry spells once established. It holds its colour well through all seasons and contrasts beautifully with silver, lime, and chartreuse foliage. Perfect for contemporary, woodland, and cottage-style gardens, it’s low-maintenance and adds lasting ornamental value to shaded areas in Melbourne’s climate.
