Common Name:
Canary Island Ivy, Algerian Ivy
Description:
Hedera canariensis is a fast-growing, evergreen climber known for its large, glossy green leaves and vigorous growth habit. Native to the Canary Islands and North Africa, this ivy is commonly used as a ground cover, climbing vine, or for erosion control on slopes. It thrives in a wide range of conditions, from full sun to deep shade, and is highly adaptable to different soil types. Its trailing stems can quickly cover fences, walls, or trellises, making it an excellent option for creating green privacy screens. While it rarely flowers in cultivation, mature plants may produce small, greenish-yellow flowers in autumn, followed by dark berries. This tough and low-maintenance plant is drought-tolerant once established but can become invasive if not managed.
