Common Name:
Sunflare Japanese Forest Grass

Description:
Hakonechloa macra ‘Sunflare’ is a striking ornamental grass renowned for its cascading, bamboo-like foliage that brings texture, movement, and vibrant colour to shaded or semi-shaded areas. A standout cultivar, ‘Sunflare’ emerges in spring with fresh chartreuse-yellow leaves, which gradually develop rich amber, copper, and deep burgundy tones as the season progresses, especially in cooler weather. The colour intensifies into autumn, making it a beautiful four-season feature in Melbourne gardens. This slow-spreading, clump-forming grass prefers a moist, well-drained soil and is particularly well-suited to woodland gardens, shaded borders, and decorative containers. It’s highly valued for its graceful, arching form and its ability to illuminate darker parts of the garden without becoming invasive. With minimal maintenance and excellent performance in part shade, ‘Sunflare’ adds a refined, contemporary edge to both formal and relaxed planting schemes.
