Common Name:
Creeping Charlie
Description:
Glechoma ‘Creeping Charlie’, also known as ground ivy or trailing mint, is a fast-spreading, low-growing perennial ground cover with attractive scalloped leaves and small, tubular lavender-blue flowers in spring. Often used as a living mulch, it forms a dense mat of green to variegated foliage that gently trails or creeps across the ground, making it ideal for softening the edges of paths, garden beds, or spilling from pots and hanging baskets. In Melbourne gardens, this plant performs well in part shade to full shade, thriving in moist, well-drained soils. It can tolerate periods of dryness once established, but performs best with occasional watering. While admired for its decorative foliage and ability to suppress weeds, Creeping Charlie spreads vigorously and must be monitored in garden settings to prevent it from overtaking neighbouring plants. It is ideal for informal gardens, cottage borders, and shady corners where a natural, trailing effect is desired.
