Common Name:
Gopher Spurge
Description:
Euphorbia rigida, commonly known as Gopher Spurge, is a striking evergreen perennial valued for its architectural form, blue-grey foliage and vibrant spring floral display. Upright stems are densely covered with spiralled succulent leaves, creating a bold textural effect throughout the year. In late winter to spring, clusters of bright chartreuse flowers emerge and gradually age to attractive tones of lime, bronze and reddish-orange, adding long-lasting seasonal colour. This drought tolerant plant thrives in Melbourne’s climate and performs best in a sunny position with sharply drained soil. Euphorbia rigida is ideal for rockeries, Mediterranean gardens, coastal plantings, borders and waterwise landscapes, where its sculptural appearance provides year-round interest. Once established, it is extremely hardy and low maintenance, requiring minimal watering and care.
