Common Name:
Wood Spurge
Description:
Euphorbia amygdaloides var. robbiae, commonly known as Wood Spurge, is a vigorous, evergreen ground cover prized for its deep green foliage and luminous lime-green flowers that brighten shaded garden areas. Native to woodland habitats in Europe and Western Asia, it thrives in Melbourne gardens, particularly in part to full shade where many plants struggle. It forms a dense mat of glossy, dark green leaves on reddish stems, with upright flowering stalks emerging in late winter to early spring, topped with chartreuse bracts that remain decorative for many weeks. Ideal for suppressing weeds in dry shade, it spreads by underground rhizomes, making it well-suited to naturalistic plantings, under trees, or shaded banks. This euphorbia is drought-tolerant once established and extremely low-maintenance, but like all euphorbias, its milky sap can irritate skin and eyes, so caution should be taken during handling or pruning.
