I'll be completely honest here... I've never heard of this plant before (you can't know everything right?). But it looks like something I want to play around with myself.

I reckon it'll work well with those gardens where Melbournians want to recreate a sub-tropical look, yet tolerate Melbourne's searing Summers.

Or, just a tough, intriguing plant for a pot on the balcony..

Common Name:
Pineapple Lily ‘Sparkling Burgundy’

Description:
Eucomis ‘Sparkling Burgundy’ is a striking perennial prized for its dramatic, burgundy-toned foliage and unique pineapple-like flower spikes. Emerging in late spring, the deep maroon leaves make a bold statement in the garden, intensifying in colour as the weather warms. By midsummer, it produces upright flower stalks topped with dense clusters of star-shaped flowers, ranging from creamy white to pinkish hues, capped with a leafy tuft reminiscent of a pineapple crown. Native to South Africa and well-suited to Melbourne gardens, this cultivar thrives in full sun to part shade and prefers well-drained soil. It tolerates short dry spells once established but benefits from consistent moisture during its growing period. The plant dies back in winter, returning reliably each spring. It’s a standout in mixed borders, pots, or as a striking seasonal accent in contemporary landscapes.
