Common Name:
Oleaster 'Limelight'
Description:
Elaeagnus × ebbingei 'Limelight', commonly known as Oleaster 'Limelight', is a robust evergreen shrub prized for its luminous, variegated foliage and resilience in diverse garden settings. The large, leathery leaves feature a striking combination of lime-green and golden-yellow hues, with silvery undersides that shimmer in sunlight, providing year-round visual interest. In autumn, small, fragrant, creamy-white flowers bloom, emitting a sweet scent that attracts pollinators. These are sometimes followed by small orange berries in spring, adding further seasonal appeal. 'Limelight' thrives in full sun to partial shade and is tolerant of a wide range of soil types, including sandy and chalky soils, provided they are well-drained. Its dense, bushy growth habit makes it an excellent choice for hedging, screening, or as a standalone specimen. Notably, it is highly tolerant of coastal conditions, drought, and urban pollution, making it well-suited to Melbourne's varied climates and challenging garden spots. Minimal maintenance is required, with occasional pruning to maintain shape and remove any reverted green shoots.
