Common Name:
Yellow Wild Iris
Description:
Dietes bicolor, commonly known as Yellow Wild Iris, is a hardy, evergreen clumping perennial valued for its graceful, sword-like foliage and distinctive soft yellow blooms. The flowers are iris-like in shape, pale yellow with dark brown to purple markings at the base of each petal, and appear in succession from spring through autumn. Each bloom lasts only a day, but the plant produces them profusely over a long season. Dietes bicolor is exceptionally tough and low maintenance, thriving in Melbourne’s conditions with excellent tolerance to drought, frost, and coastal exposure once established. It grows well in full sun to part shade and adapts to a wide range of soil types, provided drainage is good. Perfect for mass planting, borders, driveways, and low-maintenance gardens, this plant also provides a striking vertical element with its upright, fan-like foliage.
