Common Name: Curry Plant
Description: The Curry Plant (Helichrysum italicum) is a small, evergreen shrub native to the Mediterranean region. It typically grows up to 60 centimeters in height and features slender, silver-grey leaves that emit a strong curry-like aroma when crushed. In summer, it produces clusters of small, bright yellow flowers that retain their color when dried, making them popular in floral arrangements. Despite its name and scent, the Curry Plant is not a component of curry powder and is distinct from the Curry Tree (Murraya koenigii), whose leaves are used in Indian cuisine. In Melbourne's climate, the Curry Plant thrives in well-drained, sandy or loamy soils and prefers full sun exposure. It is drought-tolerant once established and can be used in herb gardens, as an ornamental border, or in containers. While its leaves are sometimes used sparingly to flavor dishes, they have a resinous and slightly bitter taste, so culinary use is limited.
