Common Name:
Merlot Redbud
Description:
Cercis canadensis ‘Merlot’ is a striking deciduous ornamental tree admired for its rich burgundy-purple foliage, compact habit, and vibrant spring flowering display. This improved redbud variety combines the drought tolerance and heat resilience of Cercis texensis with the deep leaf colour and ornamental appeal of forest pansy types. In early spring, masses of rosy pink to magenta pea-shaped flowers emerge along the bare branches before the foliage appears, creating a spectacular seasonal feature. As the season progresses, the glossy dark purple leaves retain their colour well through summer, especially when planted in a sunny position. ‘Merlot’ develops a neat, rounded canopy that makes it ideal for feature planting, smaller gardens, courtyards, and streetscapes. In Melbourne’s climate, it grows best in full sun to part shade with well-drained soil and benefits from occasional deep watering during prolonged dry periods. Its compact size, dramatic foliage, and reliable seasonal interest make it a highly desirable ornamental tree.
