Common Name:
Eastern Redbud 'Aurelian'
Description:
Cercis canadensis 'Aurelian' is a striking deciduous small tree or large shrub, prized for its brilliant golden-yellow new foliage that matures to lime green, creating a luminous presence in the garden. In early spring, before the leaves emerge, the branches are adorned with masses of soft pink, pea-like flowers that bloom directly along the stems and trunk—a unique feature known as cauliflory. 'Aurelian' offers year-round interest with its vivid spring flowers, golden foliage through the growing season, and a graceful branching structure in winter. It performs well in Melbourne gardens when planted in a sunny to lightly shaded position with well-drained soil. While it prefers some protection from harsh afternoon sun to preserve leaf colour, it's generally hardy and drought-tolerant once established.
