Common Name:
Prostrate Swamp Sheoak ‘It and a Bit’
Description:
Casuarina glauca ‘It and a Bit’ is a low-growing, spreading form of the Swamp Sheoak, specially selected for its dense, cascading habit and versatility in landscaping. It forms a prostrate mat with a gentle trailing or semi-weeping edge—hence the name—making it ideal for banks, retaining walls, rockeries, and as a ground cover in both formal and native garden designs. The fine, grey-green, needle-like branchlets create a soft, flowing texture that offers year-round visual interest. Like its parent species, this cultivar is exceptionally hardy, tolerating drought, coastal exposure, and heavy or saline soils, including periodically waterlogged areas. Perfectly suited to Melbourne’s variable conditions, ‘It and a Bit’ is low-maintenance, fast-establishing, and excellent for erosion control. It produces small, inconspicuous flowers and woody cones and is well-suited to mass planting for weed suppression or erosion-prone sites.
