Common Name:
Native Pigface
Description:
Carpobrotus rossii, commonly known as Native Pigface, is a hardy Australian succulent ground cover naturally found along coastal dunes and inland areas. It features fleshy, triangular green leaves and produces large, vibrant purple to magenta daisy-like flowers with yellow centres, typically from spring through summer. This species is incredibly resilient, thriving in sandy and poor soils, and offering excellent erosion control in both residential and natural landscapes. Its thick, mat-forming habit makes it ideal for stabilising embankments, covering large open spaces, or adding bold seasonal colour to native gardens. Native Pigface is perfectly suited to Melbourne’s climate, tolerating full sun, salt-laden coastal winds, drought, and light frost. The foliage turns red-tinged in colder months, adding additional ornamental interest. It’s a low-maintenance, water-wise plant with ecological value, attracting bees and providing habitat cover, while its juicy leaves have been used traditionally for soothing skin irritations.
