Common Name:
Catharina Bellflower
Description:
Campanula ‘Catharina’ is a vigorous, mat-forming perennial known for its stunning display of clear blue, star-shaped flowers that appear in abundance from late spring through to early autumn. A cultivar of Campanula poscharskyana, ‘Catharina’ is especially admired for its more intense blue tones and slightly larger blooms compared to the species. It creates a beautiful, flowing carpet of colour, ideal for softening garden edges, spilling over retaining walls, filling crevices in rockeries, or cascading from pots and hanging baskets. The plant’s semi-evergreen foliage forms a dense mat of small, toothed leaves that help suppress weeds and reduce soil evaporation. Hardy and low-maintenance, it thrives in full sun to part shade in Melbourne gardens and prefers well-drained soil. Once established, it is drought-tolerant and will gently self-seed, making it an excellent choice for naturalistic or cottage-style plantings.
