Description: Camellia sinensis is an evergreen shrub or small tree native to East Asia, renowned for its leaves and leaf buds used in tea production. The plant features glossy, dark green leaves and fragrant, white flowers with prominent yellow stamens. In Melbourne's climate, it thrives in well-drained, slightly acidic soils with ample organic matter. While it can tolerate full sun, partial shade is preferable to protect the foliage from scorching. Regular watering is essential, especially during dry periods, to maintain soil moisture. Mulching helps conserve moisture and regulate soil temperature. Pruning after flowering encourages bushier growth and maintains a manageable size. The young, tender leaves are harvested for tea production, with processing methods determining the type of tea produced, such as green, black, or oolong.
