Common Name: Camellia 'Volunteer'
Description: Camellia japonica 'Volunteer' is an evergreen shrub celebrated for its large, anemone-form blooms that debut in mid- to late winter. Initially, the flowers present a soft pink hue with lighter edges, resembling a dusting of icing sugar. As they mature, the pink deepens, while the petal tips remain light, enhancing the two-tone effect. The glossy, dark green foliage provides a striking contrast to the vibrant blooms. In Melbourne's climate, 'Volunteer' thrives in light shade, preferring moist but well-drained, humus-rich, acidic soils. It's relatively compact, making it suitable for large patio pots or as a feature plant in garden beds or borders. To prevent damage to emerging buds and flowers, protect from cold, dry winds and early morning sun. Water established plants during dry periods to prevent bud drop, and apply a balanced liquid fertiliser in mid-spring and again in June. After flowering, lightly trim or prune any branches that spoil the plant's appearance.
