Common Name:
Weeping Bottlebrush
Description:
Callistemon viminalis ‘Prolific’ is a graceful, evergreen Australian native with a softly weeping habit and dense deep green foliage, grown for its masses of vivid red bottlebrush flowers. True to its name, it flowers heavily through spring and often continues with spot flowering at other times of the year, bringing long-lasting colour and movement to the garden. This hardy variety performs well in Melbourne in a sunny to partly shaded position and adapts to a wide range of soils, including sandy, loamy and heavier clay soils, provided it is given reasonable drainage while establishing. Once established it is drought tolerant, handles short periods of wet soil, and is generally low maintenance. It responds well to pruning after flowering, making it an excellent choice for screening, informal hedging, feature planting or as a small ornamental tree. The nectar-rich flowers are highly attractive to birds, bees and other pollinators, making it a reliable habitat plant as well as a striking landscape feature.
