Common Name:
Dura Heat River Birch
Description:
Betula nigra ‘BNMTF’, marketed as Dura Heat™, is a hardy deciduous ornamental tree valued for its attractive peeling bark, strong heat tolerance, and graceful growth habit. This improved River Birch cultivar was selected for its superior resistance to heat stress and leaf spot issues, making it particularly well suited to warmer Australian conditions compared to many traditional birches. It develops a broad pyramidal canopy with lush green foliage that turns soft yellow in autumn before leaf fall. One of its most striking features is the ornamental bark, which peels in layers to reveal tones of salmon, cream, cinnamon, and tan, providing year-round visual interest. Dura Heat™ performs exceptionally well in Melbourne’s climate when planted in full sun to part shade with moist, well-drained soil. It tolerates periods of wet soil better than many other ornamental trees and benefits from regular watering during extended dry conditions. Its elegant form and beautiful bark make it ideal as a feature tree, avenue planting, or specimen in larger gardens and parklands.
