Common Name:
Evergreen Azalea – Hinode Giri
Description:
Azalea ‘Hinode Giri’ is a compact, evergreen Kurume hybrid known for its mass of vivid crimson‑pink flowers in mid‑to‑late spring. Originating from early 20th-century Japanese selections by Ernest Wilson, this variety forms a dense, rounded mound adorned with narrow glossy leaves that may develop bronze‑red tones in colder months. Ideal for Melbourne’s climate, it thrives in part‑shade to filtered sun with moist, well‑drained, acidic soil enriched with organic matter. It is reliable and cold‑hardy, surviving light frost, and thanks to its low maintenance nature — including light post‑bloom pruning — is perfect for mixed borders, container plantings, hedges or mass displays. Its spring display is highly attractive to bees and butterflies.
