Common Name: Midgen Berry
Description: Austromyrtus dulcis, commonly known as Midgen Berry, is a versatile Australian native shrub cherished for its sweet, edible berries and ornamental appeal. Typically reaching up to 2 metres in height, it features ovate to lanceolate leaves that are mid to dark-green on the upper surface and paler beneath, often with a silky texture. New growth displays a reddish-bronze hue, adding seasonal interest. In spring and summer, the plant produces small, white, five-petalled flowers, approximately 1 cm across, which are followed by round, light-purple berries dotted with dark-purple spots. These berries ripen in late summer to early autumn and are renowned for their sweet, aromatic flavour with a hint of spice, making them a popular choice for fresh consumption or in jams and desserts. Midgen Berry thrives in well-drained soils with adequate moisture and prefers part-sun positions. It is well-suited to Melbourne's climate, provided it is protected from harsh, salt-laden winds and extreme frost. This shrub is ideal for rockeries, sloping gardens, or as a low hedge, and benefits from regular pruning to maintain a compact form.
