Common Name:
Variegated Cast Iron Plant
Description:
Aspidistra elatior 'Variegata' is a tough, elegant evergreen foliage plant prized for its broad, deep green leaves adorned with distinctive creamy-white to pale yellow stripes. Renowned for its exceptional resilience, it thrives in conditions where many other plants struggle, making it an excellent choice for shaded gardens, courtyards, underplanting beneath trees, or as a long-lived indoor specimen. Slow-growing but highly reliable, this hardy perennial tolerates drought once established, dry shade, poor soils, and periods of neglect. In Melbourne's climate, it performs best in well-drained soil enriched with organic matter and protected from harsh afternoon sun, which can scorch the variegated foliage. Small, unusual purple flowers may appear at ground level during the warmer months but are often hidden beneath the foliage. Its striking leaves provide year-round structure and colour, making it a valuable addition to both contemporary and traditional landscapes.
